Congratulations to Janet Holmes – this is, of course, a bastion which formed part of the old London City wall near what was Cripplegate and is now in the Barbican estate. Made largely of stone shipped from Maidstone in Kent, the five metre high wall had a two metre deep ditch in front of it and was dotted with these bastions. It stood largely intact from Roman times until the medieval period. For more on the wall, see our earlier post here.

Exactly it’s a medieval tower built on the foundations of the Roman Wall! The Barbican complex includes it.
